I finally dumped it out as I was sick to death of its’ judgmental stare and spent an evening watching TV and darning nine individual socks. I brought my mending basket into our living room, where it unceremoniously sat unloved and ignored for at least three weeks.Not only is it a monetary issue, but it’s also an environmental act as overmanufacture of consumer goods is damaging our dear planet. I imagine that a lot of people would straight up toss a broken chair, but I feel that there’s an inherent responsibility to maintain and repair your belongings whenever possible. It’s not hugely a brag worthy repair job, as the skill level required was pretty low, but it’s still an accomplishment as it kept a functional item in circulation and out of the landfill. It was a simple 2″x4″, which made it an easy project. My husband and I replaced the footing part on an outdoor wooden lounge chair that had a single disintegrated piece.

I used to take my kids there a lot when they were little as there were always ducks, geese and even the occasional nasty rat tailed beaver nutria! I even hosted my son’s second birthday party there with a “duckling” theme. It wasn’t raining (always a consideration in Portland!) plus we arrived nice and early, which granted us the opportunity for the very bestest park benches. So when my next door neighbor and I were planning a get together, it was the perfect Monday destination. Take a wild guess which day I prefer to visit. I live not too far from the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, which normally costs $5 for admission but is free on Mondays. Spring has finally sprung in Portland, Oregon which means our rhododendron bushes and azaleas are in glorious full bloom.Indeed, Parfit comes across in the book as someone who would follow logic where it led, whether it was with or against the currents of contemporary culture.

Perhaps he was hesitant to explain Parfit’s conclusions as anything other than the result of ingenious argumentation. Separately, Edmonds mentions Parfit’s aphantasia, a condition of incapacity to generate mental images that also seems, Edmonds notes, to be linked with a weak sense of connection to one’s past, but he doesn’t draw out the connection between Parfit’s life and his thinking.

Though he was professionally competitive - cutthroat, even, Edmonds suggests - those instincts did not extend to his romantic life, in which he appears to have been a kind of proto-polyamorist in the ’70s, another instance of porous borders. He was, in other ways, too, clearly a product of his era. His first paper, the barnburner “Personal Identity,” came in 1971 its claims that persons are always shading into new identities and that they have deeper connections to each other than they might realize seem appropriate to the hippie heyday. In some ways, Parfit’s work was of his times, and “Parfit” draws out those connections, perhaps without discussing them as explicitly as a reader might like.
